me ranting with pet peeves

Pet Peeves

Last updated November 2004.

I’m going to start slow on these, I don’t want a rant-fest.  Check back occasionally and maybe something will have pissed me off enough to earn a spot.

Nuclear:  I am sick and tired of people (primarily politicians) who almost glory in their ignorance.  It’s like they’re proud of it.  Take Bush (our current President), he’s been bashed in the press and criticized roundly for pronouncing it “Noo-Kyoo-Lar”.  But he insists on remaining ignorant!  He will not change his pronunciation even though he’s well aware that he is pronouncing it completely incorrectly.  He’s proud of it!  For those who don’t know, and who do wish to improve themselves, notice there is only one “u” in nuclear.  It’s pronounced “Noo-Klee-ur”.

Locked Double Doors at businesses:  You walk up to a double glass door.  You reach out to open one of them and it’s locked!  Why?  There are two doors there, why not unlock them both?  Just too tired?  Too lazy?  There is nothing that will make me grimace faster than that.

Being handed religious literature:  Please, excuse me from your delusion and stop wasting paper!  I can’t think of anything (other than general ignorance) that has caused more misery, idiocy, pain, and waste than religion.  These morons can’t figure out they live in Paradise now.

I’m a non-denominational atheist (I consider almost all religions equally ridiculous).   I have an admiration for Tibetan Buddhism, which seems more philosophy than religion.  If I =had= to align myself with any religion it would Pantheism first, Paganism second.  These are “nature-oriented, reverence” religions rather than “human-oriented, dominance” religions.

In any case, having simplistic, naďve, pie-in-the-sky literature (which, in my mind, is more wicked than had they handed me pornography) forced on me from these head-in-the-sand fear mongers really used to tick me off.  Then I came up with an idea!  I printed up some business cards on my printer and carry them with me everywhere.  Whenever I’m accosted by these people I take their literature and give them a card.

The card front looks like this:

_____________________________________

Have you considered…

Paganism:  The real “old time Religion”

Pantheism: The reality of THE unifying force, call it what you will, literally embraces all: plants, rocks, cats.  Even humans.

The back of the card has this:

Advantages to Paganism / Pantheism:

No required periodic meetings.  Religious experiences are constant and meaningful through-out your day!

Dependence on individuality & rationality frees us from neurotic / psychotic need to hurt or maim.  Killing is not taken lightly.

Unifies us all, difference eliminated between groups, cultures, etc., thus freeing us from needless, unproductive hate.

No need to interfere with other peoples lives since we trust them to do the best for themselves.

You can IMAGINE the looks they give me!  I also include my name and phone number in case one of them comes to their senses.  Feel free to use the text if you like.

Oh Man:  It’s started!  After viewing my web page a pal of mine, Bev, wanted to add a few of her own:

“Maybe some to add to your list...people who just can't seem to acknowledge that you've just opened and held the door open for them ( I usually yell "YOU'RE WELCOME")...you are the only car on the road for miles and some asshole has to pull out from his driveway RIGHT in front of you, only to proceed at a speed 20 mph LESS than the posted limit... people who want to give you ideas for YOUR pet peeve list.....”

Patricia (a.k.a. Trish), a Naxos pal of mine writes “Don’t you foam at the mouth at misused apostrophes e.g. apple’s [simple plural]…?”  Well I don’t foam at the mouth, but it is annoying...if I notice it.
