Lead art for the Universe in Perspective

The Universe in Perspective

FREEWARE: An electronic "book" on the scale of the universe. By comparison and analogy a picture of the size and scope of the Universe is obtained. Get a "feel" (Gee Whiz!) for distances, masses, and ranges of energy in the Universe.  Comes with 1/3 of the book free, 23 other chapters available (as well as an unlimited bookmark feature) upon registration. Chapters are "stand alone," meaning you can read these enjoyably without reading the whole book.  You can Download (2 & half Megabytes) here, installation and registration instructions are below.  For those interested in science the freeware version will give you plenty to ponder.  It is designed for the science enthusiast and for those who want to know more about science and it is presented in a different way than usual.

I wrote this book (and programmed the software) because it is the type of book I wanted to read.  Since it wasn't available I wrote one!  It's great for the science knowledgeable since it presents data in a "perspective" not usually seen.  It's also great for those educating themselves re: science, all the basics are there.  But it is not a textbook, it is designed to be fun.

Disclaimer:  When I wrote this there was a wide range of opinions on the age of the Universe: 12 billion to 20 billion years.  I, liking superlatives, opted to use 20 billion years.  Then they launched the Hubble Space Telescope and they say now, with a good degree of certainty, that the Universe is 14 billion years old.  I’ve not changed the text, I will someday. This won’t ruin your reading pleasure, I just wanted you to know.

The kind of stuff you will find in the book:

(1) How long would it take to drive a car to the Sun?  How long if we  went the speed of the Earth around the Sun (18 miles/second)? What if we  went the speed of light?  (2) About how many pounds of TNT does the  average person "burn" each day?  (3) How much pressure does sunlight  exert on the Earth?  How about starlight?  1). Answers:  At 75 miles per hour it will take almost 142 years to travel to the Sun, at 18.5 miles per second it will take a bit more than 2 months, and at the speed of light the trip takes 8 1/3 minutes.  2).  The average person uses around 2200 Calories a day which is equivalent to 4.4 pounds of TNT!  In a year 25,000 people "sweat" the equivalent of the Hiroshima bomb.  The difference in effect?  It takes the people a year to release this quantity of energy, the atomic bomb releases it in millionths of a second. 3).  The pressure exerted by sunlight on the Earth is 65,700 tons, by starlight only 4 2/3 ounces.

Install instructions:

Another chance to download the free version (2 & half Megabytes)

The file you download is a ZIP file, inside it are the installation files.  Windows-XP has native support for ZIP files, otherwise you will need some ZIP reading software.

Once you’ve opened up the ZIP file, double click the file SETUP.EXE.  If the ZIP software you’re using won’t allow you to run SETUP.EXE, then you’ll need to extract the files to a folder first (preferably one you create), then double click SETUP.EXE.  You’ll be walked through the installation.

Should you decide to register the software no further downloads are needed.  You’ll receive a registration number via email which is all you need to make the program fully functional.

UnInstall instructions:

Open the “Control Panel”, then from there open “Add/Remove Programs”.  Find the entry for “Universe in Perspective” and choose un-install.

Registration instructions:

Registration costs $20.01.

I’m just one guy, no secretaries and no employees, so payment methods are limited.  I accept PayPal™ , which accepts most major credit cards (PayPal™  does not accept AMEX corporate), payment from your PayPal™  account (if you have one), and bank transfers,  or you can mail money orders/cashier’s checks (no personal checks). PayPal™ is the payment method in use on eBay™, and can accept payment from many countries around the world.  If you would like to see my eBay rating (how other buyers think of me) go to eBay feedback forum and enter my user name, Juuliuus, in the “search for member” box at the top of the page.

As I mentioned above: my situation is varied, I move around a lot. If you’d like to register email me first to see if I’m home and available. That way you’re not waiting around with money out of pocket.  When I respond to you then you can be assured that your registration number will come as soon as I get PayPal™ payment, or when a mailed check has cleared (I’ll provide mailing instructions in my return email if you prefer to mail a cashier’s check or money order).

If you’ve tried it out and like it click the PayPal button below to make payment

Be sure to email me first and make sure I’m available

Once you receive your registration number go to “Help” on the main menu, then “Register”.  Copy the registration number from the email (highlight the entire number, then hold down the Control key while you press “C”, or use the email’s edit menu and select “Copy”).  Then paste the registration number in the edit field on the registration form (click inside the edit field so that it has focus and has the cursor blinking in it, then hold down the Control Key while you press “P”).  Press the “OK” button and you’re done.

Keep the registration number in a safe place and backed up, in case you need to re-install and re-register, or in case you get a new computer and want the software over there too. You are allowed to have the program on up to 4 of your own personal computers for the registration fee.
